heroines of truthspeak

May 27, 2012

Looks like New Mexico’s Erin Bouquin has joined Joycelyn Elders and others in the list of sensible leaders whose wisdom is censored or punished.

Guns

Guns don’t kill !! Third Graders do.

Ann Coulter ignores facts

July 6, 2011

So I recently listened to Ann Coulter interviewed on Rush Limbaugh about a book she’s coming out with and she makes a ludicrous statement. She says political violence in this country has always been from the left. She cites the anarchists of a century & more ago. She seems to be oblivious to Timothy McVeigh or to the plots of Hutaree Militia and Francis Schaeffer Cox. It’s scary that she sells so many books propogating erroneous crap.

majority

September 28, 2010

The old phrase is “majority rules” but if the majority are suckers for the big money ads and the visceral appeals to low bigotry then what do we face? The current state of our nation is discouraging. Rewriting history textbooks to ignore the atrocities against Native-Americans, to lessen the aura of Jefferson, to slight the labor champions like César Chávez is heresy indeed to me. Truth must not be hidden. Right must not be trodden under by might.

2010’s place in time

January 2, 2010

In the rich tapestry of time what will our minute threads contribute to the wonderful whole? It’s hard to believe the moment is a glistening golden point. It seems more likely a dark interum, but hopefully not a shadowy edge to some horrific epoch.
We are warned that nuclear proliferation looms, that random acts of terror will persist, that economies will worsen and climate is careening into chaos. But we know that history has had ominous moments before, and with determination and hope, with science and charity, with education and empathy people have progressed.
Let the twenty first century climb from it’s early darkness into a brilliant global commonweal.

catagories matter

December 7, 2009

How often do you see these headlines?: Six Die in Deadly Chihuahua Attack / Mass Murderer used son’s BB Gun / City Council discusses Tylenol Addicts? Clearly the breed or calibre matters. Pit Bulls, FN Herstal Five-seveN pistols and heroin are issues. Rules should vary based on reality, age, etc.

Cacaphony of Catholic cant

November 12, 2009

The news today focuses on the Catholic diocese of Washington, DC and its threats to cease its charities to locals if DC oks gay marriage and protects gay rights. The position seems to be we reserve the right to refuse compassion to people based upon the way they are born (God created & not aborted, we presume). The obvious politics of this and the ludicrous illogic overwhelms me. Of course, anyone who’s seen the movie The Mission knows callous politics has a long history of eclipsing mercy and justice from the authorities of the church.

profiles differ

October 31, 2009

The old phrase profiles in courage could in singularity fit Mahmoud Vahidnia, who spoke out in Iran against the tyrannical regime. Moral courage and speaking truth to authorities exhibits a special valor. The West needs to remain vigilant in its recognition of the heroes within closed societies. Their example must not be lost in the shadows of a repressed press.

At the same time we see other examples of submission to the pressures of unprincipled powers. Abdullah Abdullah seems ready to withdraw from his challenge to Karzai in Afghanistan. Ghosts of Diem and Allende whisper in his ear? Who knows what machinations are at work?

Then there is Dede Scazzafava. Is she a marionette being withdrawn from the stage. Under strange duress indeed. The GOP is a sad party taken over by the parasitic remnants of the old Dixicrats. What connection Lincoln now? Obama is the Lincoln emulator – how ironic is that?

Michael Brewer

October 19, 2009

The case of teen Michael Brewer being set ablaze with alcohol and a lighter by acquaintances is one of the more horrendous stories to emerge recently. While there are many wonderful kids there are far too many who seem without humanity. The bizarre games and warped media that seem popular are making our tots into teen monsters. Peer pressure and mob mentality aren’t making a good atmosphere either. Rather than teaching to tests to satisfy NCLB we need to be teaching some basic mores for independent resolve in right living. Rather than denigrating the “snitch” we need to laud the justified whistle-blower. Rather than tolerating the bully and glorifying the macho man we need to be encouraging ostracism of the mean and arrogant. Programs like the Southern Poverty Law Center’s “Teaching Tolerance” need to be made prominent.

Fascists & their facades

September 1, 2009

Ned Ryun’s New Hitler Youth program and its ilk are fanning the flames of fanaticism by telling people to keep their kids home from public schools on September 8 because of a televised address by the President being promoted through the Department of Education. If it were Reagan or Bush they’d be encouraging it, but because it is a positive Progressive Obama, naaah. The twisted bigots are hard at work trying to blame our new president for a mess W took eight years to create.
